Currently, the sales of botanical dietary supplements and other medicinal natural products (NPs) are on the rise, which greatly increases the possibility of significant pharmacokinetic interactions between NPs and drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, when patients regularly take NPs with other drugs, it is very likely that natural product-drug interactions (NPDIs) will change the efficacy and safety of traditional drugs.
However, due to the batch heterogeneity of natural products, the lack of relevant pharmacokinetic information, and the complexity of their interactions, evaluating NPDI is more challenging than drug-drug interactions. As NPDI is affecting people's quality of life, it is becoming more and more urgent to develop systematic experimental methods and calculation methods to guide researchers to conduct NPDI research correctly.
